The Advantages of Using Highly Reflective Sheet Targets
Instead of Glass Reflectors

General Description

Sheet Targets and Reflective Tape refer to square-shaped, pre-cut, highly adhesive, specially designed targets supplied by some manufacturers such as Leica and Sokkia.

Advantages of Sheet Targets and Reflective Tape

The advantages of these targets are:

  1. Highly visible in low-light conditions – 1,000 times brighter than glass reflectors (prisms).
  2. Very low cost compared to glass reflectors (prisms).
  3. Very small size compared to glass reflectors (prisms).
  4. Permanent attachment.
  5. No moving parts and therefore very accurate.
  6. Easily replaced if damaged.

Advantages of Sheet Targets / Reflective Tape Attached to Scales

The advantages of sheet targets / reflective tape when attached to scales are:

  1. It becomes possible to use multiple targets on each scale thereby significantly increasing the probability of a direct measurement to any of the sheet targets with a fixed target height.
  2. It is very easy to train unskilled workers to use the scales. Set the anchor bolt adapter over the anchor bolt, rotate the scale to face the total station, and set the scale vertical with the level vials.
  3. Unskilled workers are cost effective and more readily available, especially in remote areas.
  4. They provide reliable and accurate observations.
  5. Scales work in difficult environmental conditions such as high wind and low light.
  6. They have reliable fixed target heights – no oddball tape measured target heights.
  7. They are much faster to use than a plumb bob and prism. In an industrial environment, the line of sight is frequently obscured by handrails, kick plates, scaffolding, hoses, tarps, electrical cables, welding cables, and workers. With a single plumb bob and prism, it frequently becomes necessary to slide the prism up and down the plumb line until an opening is detected, and this consumes time. None of this is typically required with highly reflective multiple targets on a single scale. Direct a light source towards the scale and at least one highly reflective target immediately becomes visible. It is possible to check and, if necessary, adjust 280 anchor bolts in one day.
  8. A company which uses these scales projects an image of a company whose objective is to deliver 100% reliability with high accuracy for each measurement.
